how to ensure irb accepts emoji input instead of escaping it?

Make sure Ruby is compiled with GNU Readline. When rvm compiles Ruby it automatically checks if Readline is installed, and if it is it will be included automatically.

You can check your Readline version in irb. Example:

ruby 2.1.3p242 (2014-09-19 revision
47630) [x86_64-linux]
irb(main):001:0> Readline::VERSION
=> "6.3"

So, copying your solution for installing the latest Readline with Homebrew, and then recompiling Ruby:

brew update; brew uninstall readline;
brew install readline; rbenv install

Split string with emoji
As far as I can see, QString does not support unicode characters greater than U+FFFF. In this test script you can see that it fails to calculate string size correctly for those characters: #include <QDebug> int main() { QList<QByteArray> list; list << QByteArray("a"); list << QByteArray("ö"); list << QByteArray("➜"); list << QByteArray("

String escaping
From your comment Debugger show me like this "],\"Name" That is the correct output, the debugger is showing you the escaped version of your string. the \ turns in to a single and the " turns in to a " once the escaping has been applied. If you click the magnifying glass in the box in your debugger it will open a new window with the escaping applied.

Escaping special characters from html
You don't need to escape any "quote" characters because you're not editing source code. It's all in memory. If you want rendered html, do nothing, eg If you want <b>Bold</b> to produce Bold. If you want the markup to display in the email, eg <p>Text</p>. Replace < with &lt; Replace > with &gt; Replace & with &amp;
